SwitchAR: Enabling Perceptual Manipulations in Augmented Reality
In 2024 I completed my Master’s degree with the submission and presentation of my thesis entitled SwitchAR: Enabling Perceptual Manipulations in Augmented Reality.
This thesis included the design and implementation of an AR system capable of transitioning users between AR and VR without them noticing it. First, I reconstructed a room at the university using photogrammetry to get a virtual model of the room. As the virtual model looks similar enough to the physical room, the system can use it to secretly switch from AR to VR. Once the system is running in VR, it can apply perceptual manipulations such as redirected walking. I then evaluated this system in a user study with 20 participants, none of which noticed the switch between AR and VR.

We also wrote a paper about the SwitchAR project, which is currently in submission for the conference UIST 2025.
In addition to that, we successfully submitted an interactivity for the project to CHI 2025.
